Keyboard is an essential tool for using a computer. Most people see a keyboard as one simple tool to use a computer, but for some people and me, keyboards are a hobby.
There are a few types of keyboard. Among them, most people use membrane keyboards for their daily usage. It is the most common type of keyboard which we can see in most places. However, mechanical keyboards are also getting a lot popular among other types of keyboard. People who are enthusiastic about keyboards choose mechanical keyboards as their daily. I also have enthusiasm for mechanical keyboards. Before I explain the obsession for mechanical keyboards, let's understand what a mechanical keyboard is and how it is more unique than other types of keyboards.

A mechanical keyboard is a type of keyboard that uses individual mechanical switches for each key. These switches consist of several moving parts: a hard plastic stem or housing, a spring underneath and metal contacts. When a key is pressed, the stem pushes down the spring, and the contacts connect, sending the signal to the computer. There are several reasons for keyboard enthusiasts picking mechanical keyboards. For example: mechanical keyboards are more durable than othe8 keyboards, as the switches used in these keyboards are rated for tens of millions of keypresses.
There are also many types of switches. Each key has different purposes. For example: linear switches has smooth keystroke without any tactile bump or audible click, tactile switches has tactile bump and audible click for more tactile feel, clicky switches has noticeable tactile bump and comparatively loud clicky noise, low profile switches are quite and has fast response time. A person can buy pre-built mechanical keyboards of their preferred switches. But keyboard enthusiasts tend to build keyboards from scratch. The question is how they do it and why they do it.
There are some basic parts of keyboards which you have to buy individually, which are the case or housing of the keyboard, switches, keycaps, PCB (Printed Circuit Board). The case is where others parts will be set and rest. The case can be plastic or metal. There are many sizes of cases as well like full size, TKL, 70%, 65%, 60%. Choosing a good case is important as the durability and sturdiness depends on it. Next is the PCB. Selecting a good PCB is a must for the longevity and accuracy of the keyboard. You have to select hot-swappable PCBs which come without any switches and you can use any switch you want. After that you have to select good switches which suit your type. Different switches will serve different purposes. So while selecting a switch you have to keep three key points in your mind, which are: what is your purpose like office work, gaming, regular usage etc. then how much sound do you want and lastly what type of feedback you prefer. Switches are the most important parts of the keyboard. Lastly, you need keycaps for each switch. Keycaps totally depend on you. The keycaps are usually made of ABS plastic. Although you can find ceramic and metal switches. But if you’re picking the plastic switches, you should pick double shot abs keycaps. After picking your desired parts, you assemble them, and you will end up with your own custom mechanical keyboard.
After building your keyboard, you can further mod it. You see, you can get totally different types of keyboard using different parts. Different keyboards will make different sounds when you press the keys. The sounds you can hear when you press keycaps have their own name. Generally there are three mechanical keyboard sounds: clack, thock and creamy. Usually the keyboard will make a clack sound which is clicky and comparatively louder. You can use tape and foams in the keyboard to dampen the sound. Modding the keyboard will result in thock or creamy sound, depending on how much tape and foam you have used. Lastly, you can use lubricants to lube the switches to make them smoother and less rattling. You can also use stabilizers, plates, gasket mounts to give the keyboard more character.

Nowadays, the world of mechanical keyboards is vast and complex. You can find hybrids of different switches, thousands of types of keycaps and cases. Just changing only one type of parts can change the feel and sound or visual or both of the keyboard. In short, you have so many options that if you give effort you can build a keyboard that will go with your personality. Technology is a part of our daily life. Most of us use a computer on a daily basis and a keyboard is a must to use a computer. So if anyone wants to pick a new hobby for them then building a mechanical keyboard can be a very good option. There are numerous tutorials on the internet on how to do it and the necessary equipment is easy to get. You don’t even have to spend a lot of money. There are cheaper options out there, even though some custom mechanical keyboards can cost up to thousands of dollars. Even the community of mechanical keyboard enthusiasts is growing. I am also into this hobby, and I’m only at the beginning level. Sooner or later, I want to build a custom mechanical keyboard for myself.
