How Music Became My Lifelong Companion

This afternoon, I was listening to music while reading the instructions on writing a blog given by our ENG101 faculty. So, I noticed a point that said I have to write about something that is close to my heart and the first things that popped into my mind were my family & friends. At first, I decided to write about how my family & friends helped me to get through all of the tough challenges I faced throughout my life. But then I realised I always have been talking about them whenever I get the chance to express myself. So, this time I was wondering what other stuff is dear to me and suddenly my eyes got stuck at the Spotify (a music streaming application) pop up notification in which the songs were being played. In an instance, I started reminiscing all the good memories I had of music.

Both my parents were 9-5 job holders. As a result, I had to stay alone at home with my aunt for a short period after my school hours. For this reason, my mom gave me her old and rusty phone which was used for a long time by her. That's where I discovered some classic Bengali rock songs which my mom used to listen to. I still remember listening to Warfaze, Miles, Vibe, Fossils, Bappa Mazumder, Nogor Baul, Maqsood O' Dhaka etc all day long. That's how my adoration for music started. Back in the day, I didn't understand any of the lyrics and have always vibed with this style of music (more specifically the "rock" genre).

As time went on, I explored different genres of music. I almost spent my teenage years listening to pop songs and Bengali band music. As I stepped into my adolescence period, my music taste got a massive transition. I basically discovered progressive, psychedelic, indie, punk and alternative English rock bands.

As much as I can recall, my first English rock song was Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. I was just stunned how musically genius people were back in the days (most of the bands I listened to now were formed before 2000). Digging into mainstream band music, I discovered a lot of great albums and EP's. Mostly, every album represents a unique storyline which is continued through every track of the album. As an example, I'm bringing out one of the greatest and most sold album history has ever seen "The Wall" by Pink Floyd. ( Though The Dark Side of the Moon is the greatest in my opinion, I'm gonna talk about The Wall). This album tells a story of a boy named Pink who becomes increasingly isolated from the world due to trauma, emotional neglect and societal pressures, ultimately building a metaphorical wall around
himself to shut others out. I was utterly fascinated by the rythmic storytelling abilities of these songs and constantly fall in love with several bands and their albums. If I start naming and explaining those albums, it would eventually become a 5000 words essay rather than a 500 words blog. I have one or two friends who are as obsessed as me with rock albums. We talk about new albums while listening to them whenever we meet. The conversation sometimes goes like two or three hours or I can say we lose track of time discussing about the bassline, drum samples, guitar riffs etc etc. How naive we are, HaHa!

Growing older makes a person experience a different set of circumstances. Some are happy, and some are really depressing. Music has accompanied me in both phases. Those complex yet resonant lyrics seem to capture the emotions I sometimes struggle to put into words. Whether in moments of joy or sorrow, music has always been a source of comfort, reminding me that I am not alone in my experiences. The melodies become memories and the lyrics become lessons helping me navigate life's ups and downs with a sense of understanding.

When I moved from my hometown for family issues, I bought a ukulele to spend my leisure as I will not be meeting my friends every afternoon anymore like before. I learnt to play the chords mostly from YouTube and try to sing a handful of my favourite songs from different genres (My voice is not that good). Whenever I have a reunion or sleepover with my friends, we always sing a lot of songs and create unforgettable memories. As we grow older, I know we'll cherish those precious moments of singing together, holding onto the joy and laughter we shared.

Here is one of our covers of the song Riptide by Vance Joy.
